Sak Yant tattoos have a long history behind. They were introduced to the world centuries ago by the time of the Khmer empire. Since then, the tradition and the art has been passed down in a lineage for many generations, from teacher to students, requiring many years of study and practice. Sak Yant Tattoos are very intricate, aesthetic and each element will have a specific meaning for the wearer. In May of 2022, I spent a day with Sombath Sakk, from Federation Khmer Sak Yant to learn more about the story of Sak Yant and also about his everyday life. Federation Khmer Sak Yant is a group of practitioners, students, teachers and masters dedicated to the practice and preservation of the unique Khmer spiritual and martial arts traditions. A blank canvas is essentially limitless. It offers us infinite possibilities to create and express ourselves. However, a canvas does have some forms of boundaries. First, there is a physical constraint that can prevent us from going further and creating larger artworks. In addition, if we develop the habit of always using the same medium to create, we can limit our experimentation process. When we only work inside a canvas, our creativity might rely on familiar patterns and techniques instead of exploring new possibilities and ideas. Just like any other field, it can be beneficial to occasionally challenge ourselves and to think and experiment new possibilities. We have to think outside the box, or think outside the canvas. Nam Jam is a vibrant gathering of local and international artists coming together to paint, create, inspire, and connect. One of the objectives of the festival is to make artists challenge themselves, paint larger murals, and use different mediums to create. At the same time, they can learn from each other and connect with fellow artists. In 2024, due to some changes in local regulations during the festival, some of the public murals weren't allowed to be finished by the local authorities. That forced the organizers and the artists to challenge themselves in this regard as well and find alternative murals to paint and work on. As a consequence, partnerships with private organizations and individuals were developed. Despite the challenges, the event was a great experience to connect, create and learn from each other. We all have unique paths, experiences, relationships and ideas. And the combination of all these things make our journey in this world even more singular, a one-in-the-universe experience. As artists, however, sometimes we might question ourselves if we should follow and nurture our individualities, or if we should adapt ourselves and change our styles according to what the market needs. Even though the answer might lie in between (as it often does), we shouldn't neglect our personal styles and should always cultivate our individualities. True Blood is a tattoo studio based in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam. The studio was founded by the local artist Hy and focuses on the idea of nurturing our individualities and using them as the guideline for our work. In today's world, our minds easily wander and we often find ourselves disconnected from the present. It's commonly believed that creativity thrives in this state. Nevertheless, creative work and inspiration usually flourish when we find ourselves grounded, present in the moment, aware and connected to ourselves, to our surroundings and to others around us. Inspiration most often comes when our minds are grounded, not when they wander away. Mat’s Mind is a French contemporary artist currently based in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam. Through her artworks and the messages behind them, she aims to raise consciousness and explore the divine around and within us. Each of her artworks represents her perception of the world, the energies that surround her, and the well-being she wishes to share with others. They are a reminder to reconnect with one's inner joy and spirit while finding the courage to pursue one's aspirations. Mat usually paints with her instinct without necessarily picturing what she will do next; she trusts and let herself be driven by her energies and her soul so they can, later on, be immortalized.
